What To Do During A Layover In Fort Lauderdale

Layovers can be rough, especially when your layover is more than a couple hours. Many Caribbean or cruise bound vacationers find themselves stopping in Fort Lauderdale International Airport for a long layover. I’ve found myself in this airport quite a bit over the years and I’ll be honest with you – it’s boring. It’s not exactly the easiest airport to pass time in. Fortunately, I’ve prepared the perfect afternoon escape while you wait for your next flight.

This has been my favorite way to spend my layovers in Ft. Lauderdale for years. I’d recommend this itinerary if you have at least 4.5 hours to spare between flights.

Alright, call your Uber and let’s go…

STOP 1: PUBLIX

Address: (1940 Cordova Rd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316, USA)

The first stop during your layover is going to be Publix. For those who know me personally, you know Publix is one of my favorite places in the world. Not living near a Publix for 12 years has been quite an adjustment. I now literally tear up when I walk into a Publix. My fellow southerners can attest that Publix is more than a grocery store, it’s a foodie’s heaven. First and foremost their subs are LIFE-CHANGING. Not an exaggeration. If you’re a sweet tea lover, nothing pairs better with a Publix Sub than Publix sweet tea and several Publix chocolate chip cookies. Bonus points if your traveling with your kiddos (or look like you’re under 14) because kids get a free cookie.

Never had a Publix Sub before and aren’t sure what to order? Don’t worry lovely, I’ve got you. My sub order is below. I’ve also included my brother’s order.

STOP 2: LAS OLAS BEACH

Address: 240 Las Olas Circle, Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA

You’ve got your sub, sweet tea, and chocolate chip cookies, now it’s time to hit the beach. Las Olas is a beautiful white sand, aqua-colored beach near the airport. Find a spot near the palms and relax. There are plenty of blue umbrellas and lounge chairs available for rent if you don’t want to lay in the sand. If you want a break from the sun, take a stroll through the many boutiques and cafes that line the beach.

Leave yourself about 1.5 hours to get back to the airport – this will ensure you have enough time to catch your Uber, get to the airport, pass security, and arrive at your gate. Your luggage will most likely already be check so all you’ll have to worry about is getting through security.

STOP 3: FORT LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Address: 100 Terminal Dr, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315, USA

Okay, friends, your day at the beach layover has unfortunately come to an end but don’t worry a flight awaits to jet you off to vacation or back home-sweet-home.

I hope you enjoyed your layover in Fort Lauderdale! Have a safe flight + lovely travels!
