Three years ago I toured a tiny home in Cincinnati and have been dreaming of experiencing one ever since. The simplicity and freeness of a tiny home is so appealing to me. I had no idea my dream of spending time in a tiny home was just a drive away in Northern Ohio. Getaway recently opened an Outpost location between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, making it a great weekend trip for those of us in Ohio and even Pennsylvania. Ready to kick off the new year with a getaway, I was able to spend a couple of days in a tiny cabin, courtesy of Getaway.

This was so much more than a camping trip and ended up being a total wellness experience! Being disconnected from the hustle and bustle of the city, made for tranquil days and an opportunity to enjoy the simplicity of nature. For a couple of days, I was able to turn off the alarm and use the sun as my notification to wake-up, I fell asleep admiring the hundreds of stars I could see from my floor-to-ceiling window, and most importantly I was able to spend some quality time with my brother without the noise of technology. We spent time making campfires, toasting marshmallows, eating s’ mores at all hours of the day, take naps, hiking, and learning how to play different card games.
It was several days of letting go of to-do lists, seeking inspiration from what was around us, learning new survival skills (my brother is the bear survival expert, who knew?) and reminding us to slow down to notice life happening around us. This was also the first trip in…forever that I didn’t have to worry about making an itinerary for or researching.

About Getaway
I love when companies are rooted in purpose and experience. Getaway was founded to provide people with space, time, and permission to disconnect with technology and reconnect with themselves and family and friends. Getaway operates 9 Outposts across the country that house tiny cabins nestled in nature.
Locations include Outposts within 2 hours of the following major cities:
Atlanta
Boston
Cleveland
Pittsburgh
Dallas
Los Angeles
New York
Portland
Washington D.C.
Getaway is an experience of discovery and recharge. It’s the ultimate getaway and wellness experience that feels like camping with just the right amount of luxuries like hot running water, a shower, bathroom, and kitchen. It’s the perfect balance of camping and glamping. Think of it as camping for those that don’t want to go into nature barebones but also don’t want the bougieness of glamping. It’s a happy medium.
In a world that’s so connected and dependent on technology, Getaway is gifting us with an opportunity to disconnect for a bit in beautiful tiny home cabins. Spend time building a campfire instead of aimlessly scrolling through social media, make s’ mores for dinner instead of ordering Uber Eats, and talk (gasp!) to your camping partner instead of staring at your phone.

Getting to Your Getaway
Part of the fun is not knowing the exact address of your Getaway, so I won’t give that away ;). If you’re really curious, I’m sure you can find it on Google somewhere. On the day of your getaway, the Getaway team will send you the address, name of your cabin, and personalized key code. They’ll also send you a link with a map of the Outpost so that you can easily find your cabin. A lovely little fact: all the cabins are named after grandparents of Getaway staff members. How cute is that?
What to Expect
The moment you step into your little cabin you’ll be overcome with all the cozy wilderness feels! You’ll open the door to a lovely tiny home to see light wood walls, a simple kitchen with everything you need, a retro mini-fridge, a queen bed, dining area, a private bathroom and shower, and the iconic floor-to-ceiling window. You’ll also find a cell phone lockbox to store your phone for the full disconnection experience. My advice is to immediately put your phone in the box when you arrive and I guarantee you’ll forget all about it within a couple of hours. Getaway even provides you with some games to play and books to read.
Outside of your cabin, you’ll have your own little world nestled in nature. You’ll have a fire pit, firewood, fire starter, and a lighter in the Campfire Kit provided by Getaway. Cozy up in the Adirondack chairs, drape a blanket over your shoulders, light the fire, and enjoy a nice campfire with your family or friends. This was my favorite part of our stay. My brother had the best time building the fire and teaching me how best to situate the logs. We brewed some tea to keep warm and enjoyed one too many s’ more. Full disclosure, we had to make an emergency run to the grocery store to buy more s’more supplies (aka. we probably ate our weight in chocolate and marshmallows). For all you camping pros, you can even cook your meal over the campfire.
A burning question from many of you on Instagram was comfort. The tiny cabin was so cozy and comfortable. Never once did we feel too crammed nor did we ever feel uncomfortable. There was plenty of room to walk around, store luggage under the elevated bed, and relax inside and outside of the cabin. The cabin feels much bigger than it is, props to the designer!
Near the Outpost, you’ll find plenty of things to do including hiking trails for all skill levels, restaurants, and even a vineyard in the Ohio location. We had plans to possibly visit the vineyard, take a day trip to Pittsburgh, and hike some trails but ended up finding so much peace and comfort in our little spot that we ended up only hiking one of the trails. Philip even took advantage of disconnecting from the real world and took a 2-hour nap. When’s the last time you were able to nap without setting an alarm?! Next time we visit Getaway, we’ll book a couple more days to take advantage of the beautiful trails in the area.
What to Bring
Less is more during your getaway! Getaway provides most of the essentials like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, towels, paper towels, and toilet paper. This is what we packed:
Clothes: layers, sweaters, pants, leggings, hiking boots (gym shoes will do just fine), rain boots, fuzzy socks, coat, and waterproof jacket
Toiletries: Face wash, toothpaste, toothbrush, moisturizer, deodorant
Extras: We brought an extra blanket and I’m really glad we did. Getaway provides you with a warm blanket but I liked having the extra one, especially when we were outside. This is my favorite blanket! The next time we go back, I’ll probably pack some classic board games.
Food: There is a Giant Eagle grocery store about 15 minutes from the Ohio Outpost, so we took advantaged and bought our food there. If you’re spending your getaway in another location, simply search grocery store in maps app when you’re about 30 minutes away. All cabins include a two-burner stove to cook your meals. I’d recommend the simpler you can make your meals the better. We also brought a pack of bottled water but learned that the tap water is safe for drinking. Coffee and tea drinkers, do not fear, your cabin has coffee and tea available for you. Getaway also provides salt, pepper, olive oil, cookware, dinnerware, utensils, and even a bottle opener! They’ve thought of everything!

Your Questions Answered
Do you have a discount code?
For you, of course! Save $25 on your booking with the code: NATASHAL25. Book your Getaway here!
Does every cabin have that beautiful giant window?
By far the most asked question! YES YES YES! Every cabin has the floor to ceiling window. The windows all face nature and you won’t be able to see the other cabins. There are also blinds you can roll down at night.
Are the cabins clean?
A couple of you asked this over Instagram Stories. They were extremely clean! One of the first things my brother commented on when we first arrived was how clean the cabin and outdoor area looked. Everything from the stovetop, cookware, dinnerware, bathroom, to every corner was truly spotless. The staff takes a lot of pride in taking care of the cabins.
Are heat and air-conditioning available inside the cabins?
Yes! Every cabin is equipped with both heat and AC. Your cabin will have a thermostat that will allow you to control the temperature. We went in January and noticed that the cabin heats up pretty quickly once you turn on the heat.
Did you feel safe? Would you recommend going alone?
Never once did I feel unsafe when visiting Getaway House. I would be okay spending a couple of days in a cabin for some “me” time. Getaway has a great post about – Everything You Need to Know For a Solo Getaway. Every cabin is secured with a personalized lock code that you’re given 2 hours before check-in. You, and those who you give the code to, are the only ones who will be able to unlock the cabin. In case of an emergency, you can have a landline available for use.
Do you feel like your site is private or do you connect with your neighbors?
Each cabin feels like you have your own space. While we did see a cabin next to ours we never actually saw the guests. The way that the cabins are positioned you don’t interact with other guests unless you make the effort. The weekend we were there almost every cabin had a car park outside of it but we never heard a noise. It left like our little world in nature.
Is there cell phone reception?
My cell phone provider is Verizon and I always had full-service, however; the location of the outposts are all pretty secluded so don’t be surprised if you get very little reception. Honestly, you probably won’t be using your phone so it won’t matter. In case of an emergency, you can have a landline available for use. There is no WiFi.
How does check-in and check-out work?
Check-in begins at 3 PM and Check-out is at 11 AM. The Getaway team makes it so easy for you to check-in and out. Two hours before check-in, you’ll receive a text with your cabin’s name, map of the area, and personalized entry code. Once you arrive on-site, simply find your cabin and enter your personalized code. When it comes time to check-out, the Getaway Team will send you a message with instructions. Put simply, to check-out, you take your things and press the lock button. Super easy!
How big are the cabins?
Cabins are 140 to 200 square feet.
Are there outlets to charge my electronics?
Yes, there are plenty of outlets throughout your cabin however; I would recommend leaving your electronics at home. 😉
How many people fit in one cabin?
Getaway has two types of cabins – a two-person cabin and a four-person cabin.
Did you see any bears?
This question made me laugh because you all know how excited I get when bears are around. We did not see any bears.
Are there bathrooms, showers, and hot water?
There are bathrooms and showers in every cabin with HOT running water 🙂 Fear not my friends! The Getaway team is even kind enough to provide you with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, towels, and toilet paper.
How many days do you recommend?
That’s totally up to you! I would recommend at least two days and two nights.
TAKE ME ON A GETAWAY!
We had a wonderful time on our Getaway and left already planning our next trip with friends and family! My brother mentioned how Getaway would make a great guys trip for a weekend. I totally agree ladies, this would also make such a fun girls trip. You can easily rent a couple of cabins and enjoy some time with your best friends.
