Self Care: 10 Simple Ways to Take Better Care of Yourself

What is self care? Self care is what we do deliberately to tend to our emotional, physical, social, and mental health. You cant control everything that happens in life, but you can control how well you take care of yourself. There are several benefits to practicing self care such as enhanced productivity, increased self esteem, decreases in anxiety and depression, and heightened self- knowledge. Here are a few things that you can do to start practicing self care:

1 . Do Something That Energizes Your Body

Did you know that exercising is not only good for your physical health but your mental health as well? Exercising releases endorphins in the brain, which have a role in reducing stress and managing depression, as well as decreases the stress hormones in the body, like cortisol. It is also an impressive outlet for frustrations and anger. So get moving!

2 . Unplug for a Day

There are many ways to “Unplug”. One is going on a media and technology fast. Whether its for a day, a week, or a month. However long you need. I LOVE social media, its literally in my job description. But sometimes even I appreciate a little down time from my time line. Whenever I feel overwhelmed I just ignore the app for a day or two and focus on other things that aren’t necessarily tech related, whether it be reading a book or going for a long drive. Another way I unplug is by implementing social media cleanses. I recently went through all of my social platforms and unfollowed every person or company that doesn’t relate to me anymore. We grow everyday, so does our perspectives and things we like, so out with the old and in with the new!

3 . Journal Your Thoughts

Write down your thoughts, experiences, goals, and feelings. This exercise helps you identify what patterns in what your going through and mistakes you may be making. Keeping a journal and consistently writing in it also gives you a sense of relief and reduces stress. Its almost like talking to a close friend!

4 . Be Selfish

I’ll be very honest with you. I am such an “Yes” person. I often put myself last in order to help others. I know, I know this is not totally a bad thing, I love to be there for everyone! But sometimes my battery starts to run low and that’s where things start to go downhill. So I started to practice doing AT LEAST one thing a day for myself. Whether it is reading a book, taking a bubble bath, taking a yoga class, a DIY facial, or anything else that makes me even the slightest bit happy.

5 . Keep Track of Your Accomplishments

Its so easy to pay attention to the negatives in our lives. So we need to put that same, if not MORE, energy into the positives. Start keeping track of anything you accomplish whether its reaching out to an old friend or family member, completing a work assignment, or even just avoiding procrastination and actually doing your laundry rather than leaving it for later.

6 . Read a Book

As you all should know by now, I love indulging myself in a really good book. Finding a good book you love is a great way to feel happy. It is such an amazing feeling to look forward to a good story. Using your imagination to reel you in and staying hooked in this new world outside of your own. Reading gives you a sense of peace.

7 . Create Something

Search inside yourself for a dope idea and just do it! Whether its a new recipe you want to try, a new poem you want to write, or something you want to draw. Let your artistic side live. Not only will you enjoy the process of building something and seeing the results, but your inner child will definitely thank you!

8 . Try Something New in Your Living Space

Sometimes a little change can go a long way to helping you feel better. When your home looks new, you receive constant new stimulus which helps you feel good. I am extremely big on changing my room around. Moving all the furniture to get a new vibe instead of feeling like everything is just part of the same routine, IS my happy place. Try it out!

9 . Intentionally Schedule “ME TIME”

ME time is exactly what it sounds like. TIME for YOU! You need to dedicate a few minutes, hours, or even a day or two for yourself. Unwind and relax, do thing that you enjoy. Being alone for awhile doesn’t mean being lonely. Use this time to REALLY get to know yourself. Put your life into perspective and about what you are grateful for and what areas you can improve for yourself. Set goals, read a book, drink some wine, binge watch your favorite, or my absolute favorite take a long drive and look at some beautiful houses. Whatever floats your boat and makes you 100% happy.

10 . Stop Being your Hardest Critic

Allow yourself to make mistakes. We all make them. The most important part is to learn from them rather than dwell on them. Take your “Mistakes” and turn them into lessons and in order to do better. Understand that you are not perfect and you shouldn’t make yourself feel like crap over doing something wrong. Whether its in your career, relationship, or your just your personal life, allow yourself to feel whatever emotions your going through but also allow yourself to move on from it and correct those mistakes without torturing yourself.
